Let's give it up for Carrie Underwood (and David Chase, truly)

Posted by: GrumpyMorningBoy 04:45 pm EST 12/03/13

I'll confess that I've been slightly obsessed with the new SOUND OF MUSIC telecast. I wish they were mounting a musical that wasn't already shown on TV once a year, but we gotta start somewhere.

The studio cast recording is now available, and I gotta hand some major credit to Carrie Underwood. I watched her like a hawk back during my "American Idol" addiction, and her humility is paying off here. She's clearly taken the advice of David Chase and others, and she's singing this score about as straightforwardly as you can imagine. For someone who's got such a throaty, chesty belt, she flips into her mix and her head voice quite beautifully, and the toughest singing -- the runs in 'Goatherd' -- come out pretty fantastically, I gotta say.

Naturally, for us theater geeks, we should all be THRILLED that Audra, Laura Benanti, Jessica Molaskey, Christiane Noll, Elena Shaddow and Christian Borle are getting the chance to do real live musical theater on network TV. I like the fact that the producers went with seasoned, trained musical theater performers here, and when else would we get to hear Audra sing "Climb Ev'ry Mountain" in a habit? Delish.

Yes, there are any number of things about this project that are ridiculous, but there are far more things about it that are fantastic, and if it becomes an annual tradition for NBC to mount a stage musical in a one-night-only showing, I say it's a good thing. Maybe SHE LOVES ME will finally make it to the small screen.
