Also, much as I love the song "Guenevere" on its own terms, the fact that the action stops so that the ensemble can just TELL us the rest of the story has always seemed a copout.

"The Joust" uses the same technique - and of course I get the fact that they felt they couldn't stage the joust literally - but again, it's that shift in the tone of the staging itself that does seem odd. I've always wondered if they figured since it worked for the "Ascot Gavotte" it could work as well here? The problem is that "Ascot" is not about the horse race being watched, it's much more about the dress and manners of the observers. "The Joust" isn't the same kind of perspective.
