Actually, before she answered the siren song of television sitcoms, Kirstie Alley had a much more varied career, including stage work and including drama. I recall hearing that she was quite a brilliant Maggie in CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF at the Taper. And then there was the two NORTH AND SOUTH television miniseries in the 80's, which is where most people first saw her. She played a firebrand abolitionist who became sexually involved with a slave. Oh, and there's STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN. Say what you want about that film, but it certainly isn't a comedy. And I seem to dimly recall a tv movie in the 90's where she played the mother of a sick child (autism maybe?) that was well-received and for which Alley won an Emmy. Just because Alley has become rich and famous doing sitcoms, it doesn't mean that all she's capable of doing.
