the song didn't appear "usurped" to me.
I think one of the ideas running through the Trinity production was that England has this vast and venerable lore
(including Arthurian legend)which has infused the culture and is worth defending while it serves as an inspiration.

the chorus seemed to take the romantic notion of fidelity and loyalty and steadfastness and use it to comfort the war-torn audience.

It was an absolutely stunning production.
