I though I'd read that when they did the half-hour episodes of The Honeymooners separate from Gleason's variety show, the ratings weren't great and that's why they did it for only one season. So perhaps even then people liked it in small doses, surrounded by lighter stuff, but not so much by itself. It generally is an amazingly depressing show for a television comedy. I hesitate to even call it a sitcom.

Of course, Ralph was not the only one of Gleason's characters on his variety show who seemed to live a rather depressing life.
