Rewatched the Les Miserable movie today

Posted by: AnyaS 05:49 pm EST 12/04/13

I'm not trying to stir up the same debates from last year. I just had a few questions . In the hospital, Valjean tells Javery that he needs to settle things with Cosette and then will turn himself in. Except he doesn't. In the sewer, Valjean tells Javert that after he delivers Marius to safety, he will return to serve his time and once again, he doesn't. I'm guessing the book explained why he broke his word twice but I can't even remember it being answered in the musical, either on stage or on film.

Samantha Barks sure got a huge break in being cast as Eponine. Does she have any major stage or film projects in the future?

One more thing, I recently read that Gavroche revealed that Eponine was his sister after her death scene, but that one line, was cut from the film? Any idea why? It's interesting how much the musical tries to distance Gavroche from the Thenardiers, and I'm not sure why.

which is out right now, but hopefully she comes back to the stage soon. I'd love to see her do Sally Bowles in the Roundabout Cabaret revival if / when Michelle Williams leaves.

Well in the book he actually did turn himself back in before adopting Cosette and was sent to work upon a ship and escaped (during a storm, I believe).

Also in the book Javert went with Valjean and Marius to Marius' grandfather's house to drop him off, but when Valjean went back outside Javert was gone.

As to why Gavroche's line was cut, I imagine to most it would have been just too much out of left field. It is fun to note though in the film during Master of the House Madame Thenardier actually swaps a baby for someone's suitcase which can be assumed to be the moment where Gavroche became an orphan (at least in terms of the film).

Thanks Mike and JAllen.

Wow, I've never caught the baby swapping scene in Master of the House. Very interesting!

In the novel, Fantine dies before Valjean goes to court and confesses his identity. He is arrested and sentenced to work as a galley slave (and later escapes). The confrontation over Fantine's deathbed is an invention of the musical's creators. He doesn't see Javert again until after he's been living with Cosette in Paris for a while.

As for the sewers, he doesn't get a chance to turn himself in to Javert. Javert escorts Valjean to Marius's grandfather's house, but Javert leaves the scene while Valjean is taking Marius inside (and ends up wandering to a certain bridge over the Seine).
