Let's be fair: the song as heard on opening night in London with Nunn's lyrics, which you can hear on the London cast album, is also more interesting than the shredded version that was performed on Broadway.

I like Rice's version (although it isn't perfect), and I can see why it ultimately wasn't used. It contains a direct threat of suicide, and it's possibly too bleak for the moment. Nunn's original version, for me, works; the subsequent revisions don't do the song any favours.
