Kitty Lunn's Infinity Dance Theater, the company for dancers with and without disabilities, presents “Unbound: Dancing From Here to There,” four performances, two different programs, December 6-8 at Theater for the New City, 155 First Avenue. The concerts feature choreography by Kitty Lunn, Peter Pucci, Alice Sheppard, and Carla Vannucchi.
Program A – Repertory Program – Friday & Saturday, December 6 & 7 at 8 PM
Infinity’s evening program features new and revived modern dance works, including Kitty Lunn’s The Unbound Suite (premiere), inspired by the elements of Feng Shui, set to original music by William Catanzaro, and performed by Alice Sheppard and Kitty Lunn.
From Here to There (premiere) is a trio for Kitty Lunn, Alice Sheppard, and Manuel Rojas with original music for keyboard and percussion, played live by composer William Catanzaro.
Peter Pucci’s Lead Me Home, a 2009 duet for Kitty and actor Andrew Macmillan, is set to three Celtic songs by composers Patrick Byrne, Turloug Carolan, and Cearbhali O'da'laigh.
Doors (premiere), a solo choreographed and performed by wheelchair dancer Alice Sheppard, features music composed by her musician father. Alice can be considered ‘the scholar’ of the company. The Englishwoman, trained in dance by Kitty Lunn, is a former professor of Medieval Literature, proficient in 14 medieval languages.
The program will be completed by Portrait of Frida (2009), inspired by Frida Kahlo, an artist who knew intense passion and loss throughout her life. Italian dancemaker Carla Vannucchi has set her work to music by Carlos Chavez.
Program B – The Women’s Stories Project – Saturday & Sunday, December 7 & 8 at 3 PM
Infinity’s matinee program, The Women’s Stories Project, is a unique and inspiring theater/dance work featuring four amazing women with courage and resourcefulness to spare, telling their stories of love, loss, illness, and aging. Depressing? Not at all! Women’s Stories is funny, sad, ironic, and unpredictable.
Conceived, created, and narrated by Kitty Lunn, the work features dancer Lynn Barr, dealing with the loss of her husband of 50 years; the adorable Lucy, who lost her mother to breast cancer and, after burying her in Puerto Rico, discovered that she had the same cancer. One of the ways in which she coped was to take up belly dancing and Puerto Rican bomba dancing, which she will demonstrate. Alice, a native of England and also one of Infinity's members, became a wheelchair user as a result of a spinal disease. Kitty Lunn, while rehearsing for her first Broadway show, took a violent fall down a flight of stairs, breaking her back and becoming paraplegic. Though the women represent different ages, races, and walks of life, they represent all of us, connected through common threads of humanity, with one another and with the audience, in this celebration of the triumph of the human spirit.
About Kitty Lunn and Infinity Dance Theater
A New Orleans native, Kitty Lunn started dance classes as a child and performed with several companies, including the Washington Ballet, where she danced in Swan Lake, Giselle, Les Sylphides, The Nutcracker, and the full company repertory. Lunn moved to New York in 1967, and in 1987 she was injured in an accident which left her paraplegic. Determined to show that dancers can move in a multitude of ways, she founded Infinity in 1995 to expand the boundaries of dance and change the world’s perceptions of what a dancer is. In addition to regular New York seasons, the company’s schedule has included appearing at festivals in Italy, two seasons at the Kennedy Center in D.C., and the 1996 Cultural Paralympiad in Atlanta. Kitty Lunn is also active as an actress on stage and TV (including a long stint on “As The World Turns”), a dance educator, and an advocate for people with disabilities.
