Does the lack of an intermission make Maria a harder role to play?

Posted by: mikem 10:56 am EST 12/05/13

This may be a stupid question, but does the (presumed) lack of an intermission for The Sound of Music tonight make Maria a harder role to play, or does she have plenty of off-stage time? I'm not really familiar with the stage musical. I believe all of the other actors are off-stage enough that the lack of an intermission wouldn't matter.

I stage-managed a dinner theater production of this show many years ago, and as I recall Maria is on a lot but it's not like, say, Funny Girl. There are a number of scenes when she's off: "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," and the two Max/Elsa numbers.

There's also the point that Underwood only has to do the show once, plus rehearsals, not eight times a week for a year. That's where the lack of an intermission would be murder.

What if one of the actors was ill today and couldn't perform?

Yes. All the principals have understudies.

Actually, the producers have said that the principals have understudies except for Underwood and Moyer, who do not have understudies. I believe this was in an interview in the Hollywood Reporter.

They probably have understudies for the minor characters. People will probably be tuning in to see Carrie Underwood. So, my guess is that if Carrie gets sick...they probably taped a dress rehearsal, and will air that. What else would they do? Cancel the whole expensive thing? I can't imagine that happening.
