I stage-managed a dinner theater production of this show many years ago, and as I recall Maria is on a lot but it's not like, say, Funny Girl. There are a number of scenes when she's off: "How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria," "Sixteen Going on Seventeen," and the two Max/Elsa numbers. There's also the point that Underwood only has to do the show once, plus rehearsals, not eight times a week for a year. That's where the lack of an intermission would be murder.
