Peter & the Starcatcher Question (Spoiler)

So, I just saw the Peter & the Starcatcher tour. I have a question. In the second act, after Black Stache's lengthy bit with the trunk, he turned to Peter (I think) to say a line, cracked himself up, broke character, got back under control, and moved on. The audience loved it. It was a perfect cap to Black Stache's bit. I thought it might be too perfect -- perhaps planned that he should break there. So, does it happen every performance, or did the actor genuinely lose it opening night in L.A.?
