I don't find it depressing at all. These characters are generally happy people who love life. The show makes it clear that though they don't have money, deep down they have the important things, i.e. love, friendship. Nobody ever questions that behind all that yelling back and forth, Ralph and Alice love each other. Those that love the show, which I venture to say are legion, despite any poor ratings at the time, are not put off by the low economic status of the characters.
