This is a highly interesting subthread and I've enjoyed every post. But in defense of Joseph Mankiewicz and his screenplay, nowhere is it suggested that Eve's story is that of a typical young actress just embarking on a Broadway career. On the contrary, it's noted throughout the film that Eve's rise is a remarkably meteoric one. And the reason it's so meteoric is plausible: It's because Eve personally knows--and knows very well--everybody who is going to be important to her career, from her soon-to-be producer to her soon-to-be director to her playwright and (perhaps most important) the playwright's wife, to the most important critic in town. Eve has the kind of career no one else has because she's willing to do the kinds of things most people aren't willing to do (and on top of that she apparently knows her craft). But it's never supposed to be a typical career.
