Wonder what Mel Brooks' reaction will be to the "Sound of Music" tonight

Posted by: PlayWiz 06:13 pm EST 12/05/13

Of course, you might remember his one word reaction (and exclamation) to seeing Cleavon Little as the Sheriff in "Blazing Saddles" while Brooks was dressed in native American costume.

I won't quote the word (hint: it's Yiddish and/or German), but in that context, it got a huge laugh in the movies.

I expect most of the supporting players tonight to be very professional and well-sung, if not always historically believable. Ms. Underwood is sounding quite nice in the trailers, so this should be fun to watch.

Knives and pens I'm sure are at the ready in any case. Here's hoping everything has pulled together for an entertaining evening.

I don't know, but it would be hilarious for the Edelweiss performance to segue into Springtime for Hitler.

I don't recall the film having all those swastikas during the Festival scene. It figures most prominently in the film when the Captain tears up the flag, plus some of the Nazis wear it on their armbands. Granted, it's probably correctly for the scene, just even more creepy for a musical that at heart is a bit sweeter than "Cabaret".

Plus, didn't realize Rolf sees the family in hiding at the Abbey but doesn't turn them in to his superiors in this version.

This is the original...not like in the film where they make him a real Nazi. Rolf is a boy and a pawn of the time...but he's not inhuman...and lets them escape.

Another reason to not cast someone in the role who reads about five years younger than the Captain! (his courting of the 16 year old Liesl creeped me out more like an uncle chasing after his young niece than two adolescents in the bloom of first love.)

Michael (Rolf) is 23.
Ariane (Liesl) is 19.

Granted, Michael does read older than his actual age.

Yes, I realize that; just haven't seen the stage show for many years.
