The whole cast has that affected "drama school" diction, e.g., Liesl sings "tot-ta-lee" instead of the more informal and more singable "tod-a-ly." I could maybe see the point of having to spit out consonants like that if they were doing this unmiked in the Lunt-Fontanne, but in the relative intimacy of a television studio, surely singing diction can be a little more colloquial and closer to spoken English.

If they'd been to drama school and been taught stage speech along what for decades was the standard lines, that's what they wouldn't be doing. Nowadays, I so often hear people sing using the long e sound rather than the short i sound for unstressed syllables spelled with e (reply, believe, begin, relief). But using the short i is what was taught by Edith Skinner, whose book, Speak With Distinction, was the standard text but is now going out of fashion.

What is driving me crazy is "ih" for unstressed short e, e.g., "girls in white dress-izz."

I got a different impression from your earlier post. What would you rather hear in the second syllable of "dresses" instead of the short i?

I prefer a softer consonant sound because it helps the legato. The unstressed soft "e" when it's held for any length of time (as in a moderate tempo song like "My Favorite Things" I like somewhere between "eh" and "uh," not "ih" because that "ih" sound vulgar to me.

Also, that "ih" tends to pull the voice out of the "round" position and then, only a note or two later, the singer has to re-establish that position. That's hard on the voice and it adds to what the singer needs to be thinking about. (Ideally, the basic vocal position shouldn't shift about but should remain consistent.)

I wish Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote somethings besides that "jam and tea" riff

at the Festival Hall. Just sounds silly even when well done.

"What is it YOU can not face?" "What is IT you can not face?"

It's the Tallulah Bankhead "Acting is Easy" version of "The Sound of Music."

Laura Benanti is magnificent though as though she is living in that time period is aware of her character and what she is thinking at the moment all with appropiate subtlety yet well communicated.

I love the song "No Way to Stop It" and Ms. Benanti along with Audra were the two highlights of the show.

Didn't care for Christian Borle's take on Max though -- it's a much more fun and vibrant role; he didn't really do very much with it, even with the additional two songs.

Well, she recovered with aplomb when that clod from the chorus stepped on her train.

Didn't Carrie sort of slip on the set briefly in her first scene as well? She did recover nicely though from that.

It's nice that Carrie's parents are posting on the board tonight.
