If they'd been to drama school and been taught stage speech along what for decades was the standard lines, that's what they wouldn't be doing. Nowadays, I so often hear people sing using the long e sound rather than the short i sound for unstressed syllables spelled with e (reply, believe, begin, relief). But using the short i is what was taught by Edith Skinner, whose book, Speak With Distinction, was the standard text but is now going out of fashion.
