What is driving me crazy is "ih" for unstressed short e, e.g., "girls in white dress-izz."

I got a different impression from your earlier post. What would you rather hear in the second syllable of "dresses" instead of the short i?

I prefer a softer consonant sound because it helps the legato. The unstressed soft "e" when it's held for any length of time (as in a moderate tempo song like "My Favorite Things" I like somewhere between "eh" and "uh," not "ih" because that "ih" sound vulgar to me.

Also, that "ih" tends to pull the voice out of the "round" position and then, only a note or two later, the singer has to re-establish that position. That's hard on the voice and it adds to what the singer needs to be thinking about. (Ideally, the basic vocal position shouldn't shift about but should remain consistent.)

I wish Rodgers and Hammerstein wrote somethings besides that "jam and tea" riff

at the Festival Hall. Just sounds silly even when well done.
