I prefer a softer consonant sound because it helps the legato. The unstressed soft "e" when it's held for any length of time (as in a moderate tempo song like "My Favorite Things" I like somewhere between "eh" and "uh," not "ih" because that "ih" sound vulgar to me.

Also, that "ih" tends to pull the voice out of the "round" position and then, only a note or two later, the singer has to re-establish that position. That's hard on the voice and it adds to what the singer needs to be thinking about. (Ideally, the basic vocal position shouldn't shift about but should remain consistent.)
