Does the guy who played the Admiral have much stage experience? He completely broke character and was totally lost after he goofed, which surprised me.

yeah, he does--and soap opera experience as well--it surprised me a bit!

In 1959, there was a live A Doll's House with Julie Harris, Christopher Plummer, Hume Cronyn, Jason Robards and Eileen Heckart (and little Richard Thomas as Ivor). Cronyn went up on his lines at one point and didn't cover especially well. You can't say he didn't have plenty of stage experience. It happens.
