At least Carrie Underwood isn't playing Helen Sinclair!

Posted by: PlayWiz 12:32 am EST 12/06/13

I'm actually rather surprised that there aren't that many comments talking about Marin Mazzie's being cast. I wonder if her role will be large enough in the new musical to be considered leading. She must have really impressed Woody Allen with her auditions, since he passed on Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone and plenty of other top talent.

I thought Mazzie was very funny in "Kiss Me, Kate", and her singing in that and "Ragtime" was wonderful.

I think we are still recovering from the livecast tonight. And bite your tongue!

(I agree about Mazzie--I first saw her as a replacement for Karen Mason in "And the World Goes Round." I recall being disappointed to see that Mason had left, but I wasn't disappointed after the first fifteen minutes. I'd gotten to see Mason once in it--and she was great--but Mazzie made the songs her own.)

I'm thrilled for her. I think she'll be great in the part. Woody Allen and his team are more than familiar with Patti and Bernie and Betty and their talents. I think he trod them out to audition for curiosity. It is better not to have an actress with a known "personality" in the part. An established Diva (in the public mind) would just come across as themselves in the part. MM will be a blank slate with fresher chances at humor and pathos. I am a little worried about whether Stroman can direct this kind of humor. The laughs in BOB are very, very different from those in The Producers.

she was funny and marvelous in the Actor Fund benefit of On the 20th Century a few years ago. I am so happy to have her cast in this!

..."It may be better not to have an ACTRESS with a known "personality" in the part..."

Sure is anticlimactic when you make a mistake. Like casting Marin Mazzie.
