Perhaps it's time to get off the high horse

Posted by: JayBee 08:15 am EST 12/06/13

To compare Underwood with Andrews in insane for one reason. Andrews had the benefit of a good director.
Andrews had the benefit of retakes.
Andrews had the benefit of a film editor.
Andrews had the benefit of extended rehearsals. Andrews had the benefit of stage experience.
Andrews had the benefit of a classically trained costar
Underwood had none of these.
Is Underwood a good actress? Not really; her acting reminded me of Ali Magraw in Love Story - kind of like that deer in the headlights with little emotional range.
But she was courted for the part and deserves credit for delivering a solid C performance- and a lovely singing voice.

I found it interesting that her best scenes were with MacDonald. That old pro elevates anyone who appears on stage with her.

Didn't Underwood prepare for months? Film, in my experience, don't spend that much time on rehearsal. I agree with everything else though especially how much a good editor can piece together a great performance out of a not that great actor.

I noticed the same thing last night. Underwood got better with McDonald in the Climb Every Mountain scene. And she was better after that, maybe more relaxed.

McDonald said something nice about singing to Underwood's sweet face. Perhaps they developed a connection during rehearsals.

Let's face it. If Underwood had more time to do the show in front of a live audience, she may have developed a better sense of timing and delivery. It must have been hard rehearsing in a vacuum.

Andrew had the benefit of a better book.

Judging from last night's broadcast, the stage version of SOM has a clunky book--especially the lines that Maria says.

I give full marks to Carrie for trying AND getting through it.
Her singing was beautiful but her acting was pretty bad, Stiff and clipped and no real feeling coming through

That said..the 2 worst actresses in the entire world and beyond are Ali McGraw and Madonna

Carrie...you are nowhere near that awful bunch...

This is an old problem that we see a lot on television.

People who are judged as right for a role are cast whether or not they have experience in a particular genre. In Underwood's case, she was right because with herin the lead , they could get this thing on TV. Plus I think she's very pretty and likable with a great voice.

However, she doesn't have the acting experience. So we have to watch her develop on the air or during a performance.

Underwood may do more of this kind of work and she'll continue to improve. It's kind of a trial by fire.

Well, but it is also the director's job to help the actor craft a performance, whether that means subtle notes and hints for an experienced thespian, or providing line readings for a tyro. It seemed like Underwood didn't get much direction (beyond the 300 separate pieces of blocking in her opening number) and so I don't judge her too harshly.

I mean, the producers and the director knew she was an inexperience actor going into this, so she would probably need a lot of extra work. It didn't look like anybody really took the trouble with her.

Because of the lack of experience and the nature of the production (oh yes those retakes and that editing are so very very important to the excellence of the first film) I find it difficult to judge Underwood as an actress. This performance though amateurish was not without charms. I thought she related well on a one on one basis with the children and of course has a wonderful singing voice. She does have charisma. I give her much credit for having the courage to take on this challenge and hope that if she wishes to continue acting she can find some less high profile projects to continue her growth.

I think with this under her belt, she'd make a great Nellie Forbush!!
