What I saw last night was terrific

Posted by: Ann 08:50 am EST 12/06/13

... but it was Small Engine Repair, not Sound of Music.

Thanks to all who recommended it, as it won out over a couple other choices that I think are good as well.

The performances were key to the piece, especially playwright John Pollono himself as Frank. Hope to see more from him, as a playwright and an actor.

Re: an earlier question of mine: my third row left (3 seats in) seat was very good. The seating is staggered at that angle in a good way.

I've always had trouble seated at the sides at the Lortel Theater. The only time I can really see anything well at this theater is on the aisle or the first row.

First row is the only way to go for me in this theatre, too.

I'm sure it depends on the height of the people between you and the stage. I lucked out.

I saw it this week and liked it a lot, too, Ann. Some of the action was a bit telegraphed, I thought, but overall, the ensemble really made it work.

A spoiler question, because I'm a superficial human being and have to know.

SPOILER:

From your angle, did you think that was a prosthetic or full frontal? I couldn't believe it would be the latter, but...

From where I was sitting, it was very clearly not . . the actor's own body part we were seeing.

Thanks for weighing in, too, Alan. :-)

I know I'm silly for even asking the question! There were a few...errr...signs that made me question it all, from my first row vantage point.

I don't know the actor that well!

I would think a prosthetic, that's the reason for the contrived lighting and, afterward, he seemed to be doing something like he had to do more re-arranging than would be natural.

Ha! I meant what was your impression! But you knew that :-)

I was in the front row, and I thought the same thing...a la Boogie Nights.

The night I saw it, there was a talkback with the cast, and the actor in question made it pretty clear, it wasn't really his.
