It is great to have some form of the stage version preserved.

It has been 50(!) years since the last time a "live" musical was presented on TV. Think about. 50 years. Let's hope we won't have to wait another 50 years for the next one.

Yes, you are right about the 50 years.

But, there were quite a few in the mid-to-late 1950s, although some were written just for TV. Off the top of my head: "Peter Pan" (twice), "Our Town" with Frank Sinatra, Paul Newman & Eva Marie Saint, "Cinderella" and Martin's "Annie Get Your Gun."

Many variety and specials show were live, including Jackie Gleason's, also many dramas.

Technically "The Light in the Piazza" and, I think "Contact" where both telecast live from Lincoln Center. But it's an entirely different animal to place cameras in a theater to telecast a dhow that's been playing for over a year and what was accomplished last evening: A "You-get-one-crack-at-this" telecast.
