I had the same reaction while watching last night — the first time I really realized the miracles Ernest Lehman made happen in the film screenplay — essentially turning a plot-driven musical into a character-driven musical. That said, I did get so much more from Mother Abbess last night than I ever did in the film — particularly a clear picture that she had a special empathy with Maria — but was that due to the script or Audra McDonald?
