| Mr Smith notes he has never seen a production of TPOTO. Really? A theater reviewer has never seen a show that's been on Bway for 25 years? And he lives in Rhode Island, a short hop away from NYC? Yeah, ALW is not everyone's cup of tea, but I'd think a reviewer would at least once make an attempt to see it. Like ALW or not, he HAS made on impact on musical theater. And a reviewer could expense a trip to NYC. | |

| He's not a theater critic but rather a staff writer assigned to review it. Providence is too small to have full time theater critics, as are most cities. | |

Guess there were too many other happenings the night of the press preview. Perhaps Channing opted out for the Gay Men's Chorus.. | |

| He doesn't have to have seen it all. Maybe he wasn't reviewing when it was in town. Maybe he didn't live there then. Maybe he's very young. Maybe it had already been reviewed for the Providence Journal by a previous critic. Maybe it is possible to be informed about theatre even if you haven't seen Phantom. I saw it ages ago, but probably had 20 Broadway shows under my belt before I got around to it. It's a big hit and decent show (although I have some criticisms), but it's not like it's Show Boat or Oklahoma. It's landmark status is derived of its commercial appeal, not some stagecraft revelations. | |

| I don't think there is any single show one needs to see to qualify as a reviewer. And, by pointing out he hadn't seen it before, he allows the reader to draw conclusions (if any) on their own. And the review seems both fair and fairly positive; it doesn't read as if he is harboring any kind of anti-ALW grudge or snobbery. There can be loads of reasons he hasn't seen it before, including just not having gotten around to it yet. | |

| Oh, I wasn't implying his lack of seeing the show was any bias against the creators or commercialism of the piece. Just seems to me TPOTO is a prominent piece of recent theater history and seeing it could provide context for reviews over time. I saw it three times and don't care to revisit it again. Though I did see the Las Vegas production a couple years ago and thought it was wonderful. | |
