| From today's SF Business Times, the PianoFight theatre company has transformed the old Original Joe's restaurant in the Tenderloin into a two-theater, cabaret space and restaurant. Asked if they are concerned about getting audiences to come to the Tenderloin, the founders say their primary patrons are people who are not afraid of the neighborhood. These evolving changes to the mid-Market area are very exciting from an arts perspective. ACT moving to the former adult Strand Theater and other smaller developments in the works. In a few years, it looks like mid-Market could be the new heart for arts and culture in SF. | |

| i remember there used to be one across from Martunis that is long gone. The Alcatraz was used a bit for cabaret but not much (and that's a shady area also) The Van Ness was a bust due to sound issues. Feinstein seems to be it now. I suppose teh restaurant will help keep it open in the tenderloin, but my impression is that this isn't much of a cabaret town to support even two venues. | |

| the boarding house was much more of a night club then cabaret. pretty big room. bette midler played here the first time she came to sf. and ms cook. and the manhattan transfer. but it closed up a very long time ago. for awhile they relocated to what is now cobbs corner on columbus. that's where i did 'beyond the fringe' back in '82. | |

| Yes, the Alcatraz is a horrible spot for cabaret. But the views are incredible. | |

| i think they are going to the use the Strand for ACT student conservatory productions and special shows. Its only going to hold about 285 seat theater and a black box theater The Geary will still house the main ACT season shows. | |

| of Geary theater (about 1000 seats) into a 285 seat house? I guess they could start doing Berkeley Rep where they have some shows in the older smaller theater that can be full package where partial package is only the shows in the bigger house. but the original article does state shows in both theaters for season. | |

| when act was first in sf back in the mid 60's they performed in true rep in both the geary and the marines theatres. and as to piano fight, they are more of a theatre company and i don't know if they will be serving food. the original joes that was in that location moved to north beach. | |
