This is an old problem that we see a lot on television.

People who are judged as right for a role are cast whether or not they have experience in a particular genre. In Underwood's case, she was right because with herin the lead , they could get this thing on TV. Plus I think she's very pretty and likable with a great voice.

However, she doesn't have the acting experience. So we have to watch her develop on the air or during a performance.

Underwood may do more of this kind of work and she'll continue to improve. It's kind of a trial by fire.
