He doesn't have to have seen it all. Maybe he wasn't reviewing when it was in town. Maybe he didn't live there then. Maybe he's very young. Maybe it had already been reviewed for the Providence Journal by a previous critic. Maybe it is possible to be informed about theatre even if you haven't seen Phantom. I saw it ages ago, but probably had 20 Broadway shows under my belt before I got around to it. It's a big hit and decent show (although I have some criticisms), but it's not like it's Show Boat or Oklahoma. It's landmark status is derived of its commercial appeal, not some stagecraft revelations.
