He's not a theater critic but rather a staff writer assigned to review it.
Providence is too small to have full time theater critics, as are most cities.

The Providence Journal does indeed have a "full-time" critic - Channing Gray (brother of the late Simon).

Guess there were too many other happenings the night of the press preview. Perhaps Channing opted out for the Gay Men's Chorus..

Dubious the Providence critic is that. More likely a stringer paid by the piece,

For what it's worth, it is a simple, well-written review. Even if the man is not usually a reviewer, he did fine.
