They might put Mazzie into leading for one reason: They don't want her competing with the actresses playing Olive and Eden (Olive is arguably the flashier role of the two) or potentially Betsy Wolfe as Ellen. That's a lot of featured actresses. Wouldn't it be better if one of them managed to snag a leading actress nod? I'd think so.

And Eponine and Fantine are both featured roles from what I've seen in the past, so Nikki M. James would be in that category I should think.
