can someone explain why a sunday matinee start?

it happens that i'm in town that weekend and will probably see it on that sunday, but i was hoping that the show had a few performances by the time i saw it. Why start on a Sunday--is it rehearsals will be M-F, sat off and sunday first performance--seems like dress rehearsal would be saturday. I would have expected maybe a Friday start to capture the profitable saturday night crowd. i'm hoping that sun mat isn't cancelled at the last minute.
