But didn't Rob Ashford share the directorial credit with her? I presume that he was hired to direct the actors as well as to stage and choreograph. I don't think anyone expected that this woman was going to really be directing the actors.

I think Ashford was listed as Theatrical Director.

It was camera blocking. A very different skill, one added after hours and days in the rehearsal rooms.
