LION KING on tour? How is it? Is it the same?

Posted by: Chazwaza 10:08 pm EST 12/06/13

I've never seen The Lion King because by the time I got the chance in it's first year, it was impossible to get a ticket, and for their entire run they have been massively overpriced and have never offered rush or standing room. So every year, knowing it'll still be there, I skip it in NYC in favor of other things.

But I still want to actually see it live for myself. So I was debating seeing the national tour in LA when it plays the Pantages this month, which I can do for much cheaper than on Broadway.

However, is it the same experience? Have the cut or shrunk the sets or costumes because of budget or travel? Is the cast as good? I mean, in honesty I'm mainly going for the physical production… so I do want to see that in the best condition I can.

Has anyone seen the tour? Any thoughts or advice?

Thanks!

You can read my review of the tour when it was in Phoenix a little over a month ago at the TB link below. I saw the original broadway production in previews and in a nutshell the tour is almost on the same par as what you would see on broadway. The main difference is the Pride Rock set - on broadway it rises from beneath the stage whereas the tour set doesn't but slides on and off stage instead. There might be a few other differences as well but the cast is huge on tour so I don't think they cut any tracks to reduce the cast size. I'm sure someone else will have the specifics as to any other differences but my review should give you a good idea.
