| The Grammys have 82 categories this time out. All of them have 5 nominees apiece - except for 3: Best Engineered Album, Classical, which has 6, and Classical Compendium and Musical Theater Album, each of which only have 3. And since there were only 3 slots this time, not surprisingly they went to the better-known Broadway hits: ''Kinky Boots'' (Masterworks Broadway), ''Matilda'' (Broadway Records/Yellow Sound) and ''Motown'' (Universal Music). I'm guessing some of the CDs that missed the cut included Ghostlight's ''Pippin'' and ''Cinderella'' and PS Classics' ''Passion.'' Last year, when this category still had 5 nominees, Ghostlight got a nomination (''Newsies'') and PS Classics got 2 (''Porgy and Bess'' and ''Follies''). Would it have killed the Grammys to allow Musical Theatre Album to have just as many nominees as the other categories? I fear it's gonna be that much harder for the smaller labels to get any Grammy recognition. P.S. ''Les Miserables'' was Grammy-nominated for Best Compilation Soundtrack. | |

| - Here is the reason there are only 3 nominees for Best Musical Theater Album. On April 6, 2011, the GRAMMY AWARDS made the following change to its rules: “It is now expected that each Category shall have at least 40 distinct artist entries, up from 25. If a Category receives between 25–39 entries, only three recordings would receive nominations that year. Should there be fewer than 25 entries in a Category, that Category would immediately go on hiatus for the current year — no award given — and entries would be screened into the next most logical Category. If a Category receives fewer than 25 entries for three consecutive years, the Category would be discontinued, and submissions would be entered in the next most appropriate Category.” In case anyone wants to read the entire press release, here it is. - | |

| Oh, I understood why. The Grammys recently went through a giant revamp, consolidating a lot of categories and getting rid of others (and generating controversy among certain branches, like Latin jazz). But the change from upping the number of eligible entries is still an arbitrary number (40, instead of 25). For many years, it was perfectly fine. My main point was that it was gonna hurt the few smaller producers who still make musical-theater albums. This Grammy is one of the few industry awards that recognize their work. (The Oscars have a similar rule about the number of eligible animated features, which affects the number of nominees.) | |

| I would think the number is closer to ten or fifteen. I only buy two or three a year. | |

| I understand the rule but there should be leeway. If there are 5 worthy cast albums like Dogfight or Giant they should be considered for a nomination. But I guess it would get too complicated evaluating the albums that way. | |
