Lansbury didn't have much in the way of "know-how on how to carry a stage performance" when she did Mame, and she had never sung in any professional capacity before. That was a huge risk that paid off enormously well. But it might have ended up an only-okay experience, and I don't think anyone was sure which of the two it would be before the show opened.

So taking a gamble on Lansbury was a good idea, and on Underwood a bad idea, based on what else besides hindsight?
