Next Christmas: How about Audra as The Mother in AMAHL?

Posted by: Teacher64 08:42 am EST 12/07/13

AMAHL AND THE NIGHT VISITORS was done live on NBC from 1951 until 1963. And the performers were not singing to prerecorded orchestra tracks. The orchestra was in another room. And for 12 years they did this opera on live TV without a hitch. Audra has said that she would love to play Amahl's mother. The show has only one set and basically only six characters. And it is only an hour long. How about it NBC? Bring this classic opera that you commissioned more than 60 years ago back to TV. Seriously, when was the last time we saw AMAHL on TV?

Times have changed. It's probably just too lovely and simple for the mass audience of today, at least the prime-time audience.

Robin Williams as King Kaspar
Denzel Washington as King Balthazar
Kenny Rogers as King Melchior
Justin Bieber as Amahl

The numbers would be HUGE!

I'm trying to think of casting that would make me run screaming from the TV more than that... and I'm coming up empty.
