Suggestions for NBC's future presentations...

Posted by: icecadet 11:29 am EST 12/07/13
In reply to: Maybe the next NBC live event should be a Lady Gaga vehicle OR start with a reality competition - Chazwaza 10:47 pm EST 12/06/13

According to an article in today's Times, the rating success of SOM "paid off so well it is almost a certainty that [NBC] will be looking for other musicals to mount live around the holidays."

Any suggestions? Keep in mind that the project should be iconic and star-driven (regardless of whether he or she is suitable for the role), i.e. Miley Cyrus in "Hello, Dolly")!

Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella

In reply to: Suggestions for NBC's future presentations... - icecadet 11:29 am EST 12/07/13

Without Carrie Underwood as Cinderella, if possible.

Is Laura Osnes still in the "Reality Show" spectrum? Would Beiber play the Prince? Dame Julie as the Fairy Godmother/Marie?

I know a place they could rent the costumes and sets!

Seriously this might be the way we finally get to see Bette Midler's Dolly Gallagher Levi!

Bette Midler's HELLO DOLLY (or even Whoopi/Latifah)

In reply to: re: Rodgers + Hammerstein's Cinderella - Thom915 03:29 pm EST 12/07/13

I agree that this is probably the only way we could see Bette do Dolly.. and I think she should do it.

It would also be a pretty probable venture with either Whoopi or Queen Latifah as Dolly.

Now I'm guessing there can not be another film version of Dolly while Carol is still with us - she can't lose the role twice - it just wouldn't be right

There are already 3 TV versions of Cinderella (and they're all available on DVD, I believe). One was already produced by Zadan and Meron, and it's the worst of the three. You want them to do another one?? ;-)

Grease, West Side, or a stage version of the Wizard of Oz

In reply to: Suggestions for NBC's future presentations... - icecadet 11:29 am EST 12/07/13

These are perhaps the most iconic American musicals and would appeal to the masses - especially with a superstar thrown in here or there.

West Side Story seems tailor-made for the cavernous Grumman studio where SOM was staged.

My Fair Lady - while not as iconic, would probably do well with Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman in the leads.

Maybe Rent, Chicago or Hairspray in a few years?

we are being a little unrealistic with the stars...

In reply to: Grease, West Side, or a stage version of the Wizard of Oz - MikeMc 02:09 pm EST 12/07/13

I think getting two blockbuster A-list movie stars to do this would be pretty difficult. Not because of the commitment but because of the embarrassment factor… if I saw this SOM I would not be interested if I thought the production I were in would be directed/choreographed/shot as poorly as SOM was. It would take a lot of time and money to get those stars AND the creative team they could trust to make it first class with them.

I think Hairspray could be done now. I don't think we will EVER see Rent as a live network tv musical event, and I don't think that's a problem. This needs to be for family, and Rent is too graphic for that.

Guys and Dolls would be a great choice.

I still think they should stay away from shows that were as well filmed as the first two you mention, but Hugh and Anne would be such great casting in MFL that I think half of the world would stay home to watch.

Although Alec Baldwin will probably insist on playing young Joe Hardy.

Then some nontraditional casting for Lola: Andrea Martin as Edith Prickley as Lola!!!!

I think it should be an iconic show that was not well filmed. A Chorus Line? Man of La Mancha? The Phantom of the Opera?

They could do a less iconic show with a very big star as well. Beyonce and Harry Connick in No Strings...would anyone watch?

Why not Cast Audra in "Kiss Me Kate"? or something she is better suited

Posted by: Greg_M 02:36 pm EST 12/07/13
In reply to: re: Suggestions for NBC's future presentations... - TheOtherOne 11:35 am EST 12/07/13

"A Chorus Line" would be wonderful but almost impossible to pull off for the family audience and the recent revival proved it will need a great director to make it work.

"Man of La Mancha" would be the best bet and there are plenty of big stars to play the leads. How about "Promises, Promises" it has a Christmas theme - or "How to Succeed in Business" - the film is good but terribly dated

Also, A Chorus Line is not a vehicle (though the film tried to make it one - big mistake) - I have a feeling they'll want to look at shows with true starring roles, not ensemble pieces.

Besides, Chorus Line is a lousy show propped up by fantastic direction and performances in its original production. Without those elements, it's basically a mishmosh.

Well, "lousy" is a value judgment. I do think the show has a sentimental mess of a book and the music is very uneven, with a very obvious bid for radio play with the big ballad.

We can fantasize all we want. But the reality is, it's going to *have* to be an iconic title *and* an iconic star. This is network TV, not a fringe cable station that can get away with "artsier" choices. We're going to have to live with that fact. ;-)

Which basically means we're looking at more Rodgers & Hammerstein, or top-tier Lerner & Loewe. Right? I mean, the titles that a significant portion of the country will recognize: Oklahoma!, My Fair Lady, South Pacific, Camelot, The King and I.

What else is there that would be a widely (widely) recognized title and also be family friendly (because you know that's what NBC is going to want).

reply to this message | reply to first message

LOTS of non R&H or L&L titles they could consider

Posted by: Chazwaza 05:04 pm EST 12/07/13
In reply to: re: Suggestions for NBC's future presentations... - MikeR 12:59 pm EST 12/07/13

Other titles besides those from R&H and L&L:

The Lion King (this would probably be the biggest rated thing ever on tv if there were a live tv production of the Broadway production)
Into the Woods
Grease (that's what the Grease reality casting competition should have been leading to)
Oliver
The Wiz
Hello Dolly
Ragtime
West Side Story
Gypsy
Man of La Mancha (a great choice, I think, for this type of thing)
Fiddler On The Roof
The Fantasticks
The Music Man (already had a recent TV remake)
Little Shop of Horrors
Guys and Dolls
Porgy and Bess
Showboat
1776
Kiss Me Kate
Annie (unlikely with the not-long ago tv remake and new movie coming out
Beauty and the Beast
On the Town
Hairspray
Mamma Mia
Once
Bye Bye Birdie (already had a recent TV remake)
How to Succeed…
Funny Girl
Sunday in the Park with George
Jersey Boys
In the Heights
Funny Thing Happened On the Way to the Forum (they'd have to cut a few sex-related bits)
Violet

It's all about content being appropriate and EITHER a big star OR a big title… both would be great, but I think if Miley Cyrus or Anne Hathaway or Selena Gomex would star in Violet it wouldn't matter than no one has heard of it before.

It lends itself to this kind of production very well I think. And it's not a super well known title but I think the right cast would definitely bring in the audience. (let's not forget that family don't need a star to watch something, they just want to a big tv event to watch with the whole family).
