As acknowledged elsewhere, Vincent Donohue was attracted to the von Trapp material for his friend Mary MArtin, as a play with songs from the von Trapp repertoire. As it became a musical, facts began changing in the musical. Maria only tutored one of the von Trapp children. The Von Trapps after being marries remained in Austria for a few years - finally leaving in reaction to all the Nazis brought to Austria by dramatically taking a train to Italy. Not climbing over a mountain. The Festival they performed at was in 1935, and then they toured extensively, before taking a train to Italy in 1938, and then continuing on the US. Tuesday is the 75th Anniversary of their concert at Town Hall in NYC. The 1956 German film about the Trapps inspired the musical - and it features songs from the Trapp repertoire - but continues to they land in America and start life there.

Interesting to note that many shots in the German film are quite similar to those in the 1965 film - and the lead actress resembles Julie Andrews much more than Mary Martin, right down to some of her costumes!
