"She's a strong, talented and accomplished performer. She's not the second coming, she's not right for everything, but she usually does good work." That pretty much sums her up for me. On occasion, I see flashes of the "it" quality that her more ardent admirers kvell over, but she isn't a performer whose inclusion in a project would be reason enough for me to see it. There is a similarly-adored performer who leaves me utterly cold. Donna Murphy. I find her off-putting. It's hard to say why, though it's not because others love her so much. Same reason some here seem to feel about McDonald. Her performances mannered - a little too crafted.
