re: Streisand and Gould in "I Can Get it For You Wholesale" for TV

The network would play up the fact that it was Streisand and Gould's first Broadway Show and make it into a big deal. The rating were huge when Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer re-teamed fro "On Golden Pond"

Streisand could even sing "Miss Marmelstein" - anything is possible

Sorry to point out that the ratings were NOT huge for On Golden Pond. 11.8 million viewers, third place of three networks.

URL: CBS survives "Pond" bomb.

I don't think "anything is possible." Streisand returning to a supporting role is so out of the question that whether she would want Gould in the show is superfluous.
(And I saw the original production. Much better than it was generally reviewed and thought of since. And Streisand was certainly not the only reason to see it.)

It had all sorts of great folks in it like Lillian Roth, Harold Lang, Sheree North, Jack Kruschen and Marilyn Cooper, but very rarely do people tend to talk about their performances. I'd certainly like to hear more, other than just about the song "Miss Marmelstein" and Streisand's impact.

Yes, nine wonderful lead performers.(Bambi Linn and Ken LeRoy were the two who haven't been mentioned so far.)After 51 years and countless listens to the OBCR, I can't recall much in the way of exact details of the stage show. Only that the book, costumes, choreography and direction as well as the superb Harold Rome score were all first rate. Very entertaining. Very funny. Great dancing.

Too cynical, too Jewish--and not in the loveable ways of Tevye and FIDDLER two years later--too New York? All probably true.

Harold Rome shows are too overlooked these days

Yes, we've had a revival of "Fanny" at Encores, which has a beautiful score, but also "Wish You Were Here", "Pins and Needles" and especially "Destry Rides Again" were hits when first done, and their scores have some great songs in them.

My favorite song from the show has always been "Have I Told you Lately" sung by the original Bernardo from "West Side Story" Ken LeRoy

Has Gould kept his voice in shape? He's wonderful on the recording of "Drat! the Cat!" but that is almost 50 years ago, but still more recent than "Wholesale". I seem to recall him singing a bit in the film "Harry and Walter Go to New York", but that is still like only 10 years later. Has he done any singing in later years?

Excellent suggestion, because we might discover a new star in Jason and Streisand would be more likely to participate.

I did see the pre-Broadway try-out in Boston fifty-one years ago. For all of the wonderful songs and performers in "I Can Get It For You Wholesale," the lead character is just not likable.

That comes across on the OCR, but much more in the theater.

So I never blamed Elliot Gould for the failure of the musical in New York. Miracles can happen. I hope someone can find a way to bring this musical back!
