The attraction here is the opportunity to see two great dancers in an intimate and, for them, unusual environment. Herman Cornejo, a prinicipal with ABT, and Alessandra Ferri, among the greatest dramatic ballerinas of her generation and now retired, give it their all, but CHERI has only two settings: heat and rue. The piece is slight but it's atmospheric, and Cornejo and Ferri, who look great together, are fully, passionately committed to Clarke's sensuous take on Colette's belle époque tale of love and loss. Up close, Cornejo bears a striking resemblance to James Franco; he broods handsomely. Ferri, the better actor, conveys a wider range of feeling than Clarke's choreography supplies. Amy Irving's on hand to make sure we know what's happening. Not that it matters much. Like most of Clarke's work, it's not dramatic incident that matters but dramatic feeling. CHERI is too spare--there is too little to see and, most importantly, too little to sense--but it's efficient. It realizes its goals, but not its potential. Still, Ferri and Cornejo are really beautiful.
