SD: reasons to be pretty at Ion Theatre

Posted by: BillEadie 05:57 pm EST 12/13/13

It must be the holidays, but I am particularly bothered by plays featuring wholly unlikable characters right now. And, Neil LaBute's Tony-nominated play features four such characters plopped into situations that I have trouble caring about.

Most of Act 1 is posturing, from Steph (company member Rachael VanWormer) and Greg's (San Diego newcomer Steve Froehlich) opening fight to friends Kent (Jorge Rodriguez) and Carly's (Lynnia Shanley, another SD newcomer) strange ways of being supportive.

Act 2 has a couple of well-written scenes, but not enough to make the evening a satisfying one. The problem is compounded by the performances, which are competent but not particularly revealing, and the deliberately (I presume) ugly set design by director Claudio Raygoza.

The show runs through December 28 in the company's 49-seat black box theatre at the corner of Sixth and Pennsylvania in Hillcrest.
