SD: BEARDED at 10th Avenue Theatre

Posted by: BillEadie 03:31 am EST 12/14/13

BEARDED is an original play written from interviews with San Diegans who work as department store Santas and their helpers. It is being presented by a company named Circle Circle dot dot, which specializes in plays written by the company about one or more communities in San Diego.

The play sets up a first act with a fair amount of snark around working conditions and the kinds of different people who come to see Santa. It's a lot like David Sedaris' story about working as an elf, only his was a lot funnier and a lot better written.

Act 2 turns Act 1 on its head and presents the characters as loving and forgiving people who genuinely appreciate the holiday spirit. It wears it's heart on its sleeve, but it functions to turn something ho-hum into something special. A lot of the audience stuck around after curtain call to have pictures taken with Santa. It's that kind of show...
