Berk Rep--Pianist at Willesden Lane

Posted by: dramedy 01:09 pm EST 12/18/13

if you like classical music but get bored at the symphony--i have a show for you. The Pianist playing to Jan 5 is a terrific play Not nearly as depressing as i thought it would be. I'm not sure if the play is so good as the actress--closely related to the subject of the play--sells this piece with wonderful piano playing mixed with dialog and compelling story of surviving the London blitz during WW2. it's a little over 90 minutes and flies by.

My only complaint is the sound system sucks in the theater so the taped symphonic portion to go with the live piano music just doesn't gel--with a good sound system, the pieces would soar. it's played chicago and LA and wouldn't be surprised if NY is in its future.

I sat on the side the day I ushered and it was fine. Maybe it was just that night.

There must have been something wrong with the sound system when you saw the play. When we saw it on Press Night it was magnificent.

This is on my top ten list of 2013.

but they are small speakers above the stage and for this show, they should have brought in some better speakers to project. Someone saw it on another night and had the same opinion--but maybe they were seated in a less than ideal location.

i saw only 50 or so shows this year (and probably 20 of them in ny), so this would be in my top 10 local and might even hit top 10 overall. I really did like it.

We were on the side as well so could see her playing and the sound system did seem a bit off but not bad. Agree with you and others abut the play, it is wonderful. We have heard similar stories but this one shines and somehow manages touch on universal themes beyond the horror of the basic story.
