Peter and the Starcatcher -- Los Angeles

Posted by: Whistler 02:35 am EST 12/20/13

Just go see this. It's terrific, and it's only here through January 12th.

I never understand why the Ahmanson / Taper / Douglas / Geffen productions don't get talked about here more -- or at all. Maybe because they're heavily subscribed and often sold out.

And good holidays to all.

I was not as impressed. It is, admittedly, better holiday fare than "Steward of Christendom" at the Taper -- but I wouldn't go so far as "terrific."

I thought it was fun. Genuinely. I mean, I laughed quite a bit -- and there were more laughs in the second act than the first. And the ending managed to hit me emotionally, too, which I hadn't expected.

But something about it didn't quite gel. I don't know if it was that, for a show that was supposed to have a sort of "hey kids, let's put on a show" feel to it, it felt suspiciously smooth and polished. Or perhaps it was that the girl character was so full of herself I wanted someone to deck her.

Couldn't really say where the problem was -- just that, although I absolutely enjoyed it while I was watching it, the whole endeavor seemed to lack charm.

I agree with Pir8Jenny. It is full of college humor and something did not jel with me also. However the night we attended the whole audience jumped up and applauded and gave "rebel" yells.

My daughter and I thought it was wonderful, one of the best things we'd seen all year. As a children's librarian, I was very familiar with the original book (+ sequels), and I marveled at how well they captured the complexity of the plot. One aspect that got radically condensed was the Starcatchers organization itself. Also how the mermaids came to be, but I thought their song was simply hilarious.

Molly's got to be a know-it-all; the Lost Boys will always need someone around who has more grown-up skills than they do. Molly parallels her daughter Wendy in that respect.

Is there a rush program for this show? I'd love to see it.

You can get Hot Tix to all shows at the Music Center, either online or at the Box office. Makes for a very reasonable night of theater. Also you can get 1/2 price tickets on Goldstar.

STARCATCHER is sold out on Goldstar, and probably on Hot Tix as well, since those go fast.

They were sold out two days ago, when I looked for a friend, but there are more.
