Ave Q at New Conservatory

Posted by: PatrickHSF 10:29 am EST 12/22/13

Saw Avenue Q at NCTC last night. Know the recording well but have never seen the show. Still remember the big upset at the Tonys when it beat Wicked in so many categories. I'm not a huge Wicked superfan, but can't see how AQ is better (again, never saw the Bway AQ production).

NCTC's production had good energy from the actors, good voices too. Great teamwork with the puppets requiring two actors. Ok set; looked like a high school production though. I expect a bit more from a professional company even a small nonprofit one like NCTC.

Full house last night. Show runs into January.

Richard, Gary, Lois...I've read many of your comments and reviews over the years here, and I respect your opinions. I'm clearly missing something about this show, though I do like most if not all of the songs and clever and in some cases hysterical lyrics. I'm sure I'll continue to listen to the recording from time to time.

I guess diff'rent strokes (wink wink) for diff'rent folks.

Maybe it just hasn't aged well? There was lots of hoopla back when it hit Broadway in 2003 and was very pertinent in its time.

Or it can be that someone doesn't have to like a popular show

There are some that hate Book of Mormon or wicked or phantom or cats. Aveq is sold out, so it must have good word of mouth--I can't remember any show in the larger theater selling out weeks in advance at nctc. Patrick didn't like it a lot doesn't mean the show isn't still good. We've all sat through shows scratching our heads wondering why everyone around us is loving a show and you want to leave the theater. I'm sure it will happen more than once for me in2014.

Oh I sure it will Just kidding. We just don't like the same things but that is what makes this site. We can share our opinions rather they are negative or positive.

I'm surprised they haven't extended.

I think ave q is better. I think the score is stronger and the book is very engaging in humor and feeling.

They can't extend because of the next show coming in, unfortunately, as it's an excellent production of a very good show. I saw the wonderful original cast on Broadway, and the first national tour in SF, and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this local production. However, I did manage to get in on the wait list, and they said they haven't had to turn anyone on the wait list away yet (though when I got in there were exactly 3 seats available for 3 wait listers).
