The San Diego Theatre Critics Circle recognized 42 productions and five special events in its nominations announced today. Productions leading the nomination pack were:

A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder - The Old Globe - 8 nominations

In the Heights - San Diego REPertory Theatre and the San Diego High School for the Performing Arts - 5 nominations

Extraordinary Chambers - Mo'olelo Performing Arts - 5 nominations

Chicago - San Diego Musical Theatre - 4 nominations

Side Show - La Jolla Playhouse - 4 nominations

The Merchant of Venice - The Old Globe - 4 nominations

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead - The Old Globe - 4 nominations

South Pacific - Moonlight Stage Productions - 3 nominations

The Last Goodbye - The Old Globe - 3 nominations

The Sound of Music - San Diego Musical Theatre - 3 nominations

The Bluest Eye - Moxie Theatre and Mo'olelo Performing Arts - 3 nominations

Other Desert Cities - The Old Globe - 3 nominations

Venus in Fur - San Diego REPertory Theatre - 3 nominations

I would assert that this list represents the consensus of the members of the Critics Circle on the best productions to play San Diego in 2013.

I counted around 110 professional productions, and another 7-10 touring shows. Though, it's a moving target, and with the festivals it's hard to determine how to count what gets produced that may not be fully staged. I left the festival productions out of my 110 count.

I had no idea that San Diego had so much theatre which is great of course.

As for the SFBATCC we won't be announcing nominations for at least two months.
