| 42ND STREET MOON ANNOUNCES FUNDRAISING GALA “WHAT WE DID FOR LOVE” Dinner & Cabaret with special guest star MEGAN HILTY 6pm, February 27, 2014 – San Francisco’s 42nd Street Moon announces WHAT WE DID FOR LOVE, a gala fundraising evening with special guest, star of NBC’s Smash, and Sean Saves the World, Megan Hilty, 6pm, Thursday, February 27 at Bimbo’s 365 Club, 1025 Columbus Ave, San Francisco. In addition to the “smashing” talents of Broadway and television star Megan Hilty, the evening will include cocktails, dinner, a brief live auction, and a “MoonGlow Cabaret” with clarion-voiced chanteuse Klea Blackhurst and other Moon performers. Guests are invited to dress in cocktail attire with a dash of red. For tickets ($375 - $7500) the public may contact 42nd Street Moon at (415) 255-8207 or for more information visit 42ndstmoon.org. The evening kicks off at 6pm with cocktails. At 7pm, guests will be treated to a lavish dinner and a live auction, followed by a concert from Megan Hilty. Fans of NBC’s Golden Globe-nominated television series Smash will recognize the “blonde bombshell” from her role as the talented triple-threat “Ivy Lynn” and more recently from her turn as “Liz” on Sean Saves the World starring Sean Hayes. But Ms. Hilty is no stranger to the live stage. Well before her featured roles on primetime television, she had established herself as one of Broadway’s brightest rising stars with her critically acclaimed debut as “Glinda” in Wicked and with her Drama Desk-nominated portrayal of “Doralee Rhodes” in 9 to 5: The Musical (the role originated on film by Dolly Parton). Following her Broadway successes, Ms. Hilty appeared in popular television shows such as Bones, CSI, The Closer, Desperate Housewives, and Ugly Betty, before landing her breakout role on Smash. She quickly gained a following, and earned a Grammy nomination for her rendition of “Let Me Be Your Star.” ################################## Word for Word Presents 36 Stories by Sam Shepard May 21-June 22 (previews May 21--23; opening press night May 24) Arranged for the Stage and Directed by Amy Kossow Z Below, Z Space's new second venue, 470 Florida St. Word for Word presents “36 Stories by Sam Shepard” arranged for the stage and directed by Amy Kossow opening with a press night on Saturday May 24 8pm, running through June 22 (previews May 21-23) at Z Space's second venue, Z Below, at 470 Florida Street. For this year-long celebration of Sam Shepard’s 70th birthday, Magic Theatre spearheaded revivals of his most acclaimed works in theaters all across the Bay Area. “What sets “36 Stories by Sam Shepard” apart is that these are Shepherd's prose stories, turned into performance, the only completely new work created for the celebration...” remarks Word for Word co-artistic director Susan Harloe. ”Word for Word was invited to create an original work by adapting his prose for the stage.” Company member Amy Kossow spent a year sifting through five of Mr. Shepard’s collections of short stories, eventually choosing to begin with a single story, set, simply enough, in a roadside diner. The resulting script, “36 Stories by Sam Shepard”, weaves together tales of his beloved great American desert highways, the endless lonesome roads along which one may meet any type of fellow wanderer. Slated for June, Triassic Parq follows a pack of sexually evolving dinosaurs in a certain prehistoric, Spielberg-inspired amusement park as they struggle with love, faith and science. Triassic Parq, written by Marshall Pailet, Bryce Norbitz and Steve Wargo, won Best Musical at both Los Angeles’ Ovation Awards 2013 and the New York Fringe Festival 2010. Yeast Nation (the triumph of life) follows in October and imagines the hopes, hardships and political turmoil of the world’s first life forms: salt-easting yeasts. Writers Mark Hollmann and Greg Kotis, whose smash-hit Urinetown set ticket sales records at American Conservatory Theatre in 2003, will work in-residence with Ray of Light to further develop this story of one dreamer’s curiosity and its colossal impact on the yeasts--and our history. “Producing cutting-edge musical theater has always been part of our company’s DNA, so we’re delighted to produce two local premieres this season,” said Jason Hoover, artistic director of Ray of Light. “While Triassic Parq and Yeast Nation use stories and characters from ages past, the themes they present are still applicable to our modern lives. These shows are bold and exciting, and we can’t wait for Bay Area audiences to experience them, likely for the first time ever.” "Ray of Light is exactly the kind of dynamic, imaginative, passionate, and fearless company needed to make Yeast Nation work," said Greg Kotis, writer and lyricist for Yeast Nation. “It'll be great to have the show on its feet in San Francisco.” Season subscriptions will go on sale in December at www.rayoflighttheatre.com. Single tickets will be available in March. About the Shows Triassic Parq Bay Area Premiere June 2014 at the Eureka Theatre, San Francisco Music by Marshall Pailet; Book by Marshall Pailet, Bryce Norbitz and Steve Wargo Dinosaurs, showtunes and sex changes come together in this inventive new musical that will leave you laughing and crying all the way back to the prehistoric era. When one female T-Rex suddenly turns male, the entire pack must question their identity, gender, and what is possible. Winner of Best Musical at LA's 2013 Ovation Awards and NY Fringe Festival 2010, Triassic Parq examines love, faith and science through a hilarious lens. And singing. Singing dinosaurs. Yeast Nation (the triumph of life) West Coast Premiere October 2014 at the Victoria Theatre Music and lyrics by Mark Hollmann; Book and lyrics by Greg Kotis Ray of Light teams up with Greg Kotis and Mark Hollmann, the brains behind the smash-hit Urinetown, to develop the West Coast premiere of this bizarrely hilarious rock musical. In the year 3,000,458,000 B.C., the salt-eating yeasts are the only living creatures on earth, and they’re up against a food shortage, a strange new emotion called “love” and the oppression of a tyrannical king. When the king's dreamer of a son ventures out of the known yeastiverse, the yeasts’ story–and ours–is changed forever. ######################################### BAY AREA CABARET PRESENTS LIVE ON STAGE THE TWO-TIME TONY AWARD WINNER CHITA RIVERA IN CHITA: A LEGENDARY CELEBRATION A UNIQUE SOLO CONCERT EVENT CELEBRATING THE BROADWAY LEGEND’S 80TH BIRTHDAY 3:00pm and 7:30pm, Sunday, February 23, 2014 – Bay Area Cabaret presents the one and only Broadway legend Chita Rivera in a unique solo concert event celebrating her 80th Birthday: CHITA: A LEGENDARY CELEBRATION. After over 700 performances in its initial seven-year run in more than 30 cities including San Francisco and Los Angeles, as well as off Broadway, Copeland’s acclaimed show comes to Berkeley Rep’s Osher Studio for 18 performances this April. Copeland, a writer, actor, comedian, and radio talk-show host, recounts his story of growing up black in the 1970s in San Leandro, California, a city once nationally known as one of the most racist in America. With wit and heartfelt passion, he explores the themes of racial identity and ultimately, belonging. “Very funny,” raved the San Francisco Chronicle. “Copeland is a winning, magnetic performer. More than that, he’s got an important tale to tell!” Directed and developed in part by David Ford, Not a Genuine Black Man previews on April 23, 2014, opens April 25, 2014, and plays through May 31, 2014. Tickets are on sale now. “Brian's personal history offers fantastic fodder for an evening of theatre,” says Michael Leibert Artistic Director Tony Taccone. “His stories paint vivid characters that populate a diverse emotional landscape. Not a Genuine Black Man looks at race relations with an unflinching honesty, yet at the same time isn't afraid to crack a joke. We’re glad Brian will celebrate the 10th anniversary of this show in our Osher Studio this spring.” “I’m thrilled to be performing Not a Genuine Black Man at Berkeley Rep — a theatre I have long admired,” remarks Copeland. “I never imagined the show would be so well-received and have this incredible longevity. But I’ve come to realize the show’s mix of comedy and pathos makes people really think about who they are and who we are as a nation and a people. After all these years of performing the show, I feel that my portrayals of the characters have become sharper. I continue to find things in the play that can evoke a laugh or an emotional reaction that I hadn’t thought of before. I hope the audience leaves feeling that they have had a great evening of thought-provoking, entertaining theatre.” Tickets start at only $30 – half that for anyone under 30 years of age. Additional savings are available for groups, seniors, and students – meaning discounted seats can be obtained for as little as $14.50. For tickets or information, call (510) 647-2949 or simply click berkeleyrep.org. # # ###################### STAGE DOOR CONSERVATORY to offer four exciting performing arts programs in Berkeley.
