AVE Q at NCTC--closing performance

Posted by: dramedy 06:04 pm EST 01/13/14

I got to see Ave Q yesterday. Excellent production. The lead, Will Giammona, was a little soft in voice--but i think he was losing his voice and concerving it--he barely made out the last lyrics. The cast was uniformly excellent and really captured the broadway production. And its AMAZING the sound from a 3 person band (2 on keyboards, so i think the synthesizers help fill in the gaps of just a piano).

The show was sold out. I wonder why it didn't extend. I thought the puppets might need to be returned, but the Decker statement was a joint partnership with SFSU that did the show last year and NCTC used those puppets.

By the way, "bush for now" has been changd to "Fox news for now". I'm not sure if that occurred for the tours and current off-broadway production.

I asked that question when we saw it press night. The reason was some of the actors had further commitments.

I was thinking of seeing but it was all sold out. I'm surprised they didn't extend it also.

NCTC has a full season of shows (both the pride plays and the student conservatory shows) so it is imposable to extend the shows. Yellow opens later in February, but before that the students have a show that runs for three weekends. I have heard that Avenue Q might be brought back later on.

previews for The Paris Letter start on January 17, so there still would have been no time to hold Avenue Q over.

different theater

Paris Letter is in the small theater across from where Ave Q was. Richard stated that the actors had other commitments, so that probably is the reason for closing without extending.

sorry, it's Yellow that is opening in the larger theatre on february 21st. when i have performed at nctc, extensions were included in the contracts, so you knew from the beginning that there might be an extension, so 'actors have other commitments' doesn't seem likely to me. could have been that the rights were not available after a certain date or the theatre is going to be used for other things.

l think they might have just sold the entire run at once

looking at the dates of the other shows, they play 5 weeks. AveQ played 6 weeks. So they technically should have ended the run on Jan 5 and extended a week to Jan 12. NCTC must have decided to sell the entire run instead of extending--since they sold out weeks in advance, it was a smart move.

Wasn't sure when the next show started. They probably should bring it back if it did so well. As their season usually ends in June, maybe they can bring it back for the summer.

the only reason i saw it

is that someone on goldstar must have been a red carpet member and release two tickets and i happen to see that and grabbed them. The Paris Letter is going into the other theater, so this theater will be vacant for awhile.

Well, sets have to be built. So, AVE Q probably had to make way for the YELLOW set to be built. YELLOW has a large set, at least has in previous productions.
