How Does the Drama League Choose Whom It Honors at Its Annual Gala?

Posted by: mamaleh 01:54 pm EST 01/14/14

Liza. Patti. Lloyd-Webber. McNally. Chita. Chenoweth. Audra. Lansbury.

This year: Neil Patrick Harris?

Not to disparage him or his fans, but to me, one of these things is not like the other, as Sesame Street put it. The names above are Broadway icons with numerous Tonys under their collective belt, while Harris is described by the Drama League as "Emmy winner" and "Golden Globe nominee."

I'm really curious as to how honorees are chosen. My gut feeling says it's a fundraiser, so the DL chooses a familiar name likely to solicit ticket sales. But I would think the likes of a Hugh Jackman or a Joel Grey would be honored before someone whose absence from the Broadway stage these ten years is only just about to be erased with HEDWIG.
